The Augusta County Railroad Museum is looking to purchase a Museum site

The Augusta County Railroad Museum is currently looking to purchase property to provide us with a new, permanent home. This website will be updated as soon as we find a new location. Please check back to follow our progress.

The Augusta County Railroad Museum was formerly in the Staunton Mall (circa 2017-2020)

The Museum featured 4092 square feet of displays and eight model layouts.

For several years the Augusta County Railroad Museum was located in Suite 124 of the Staunton Mall in Staunton Virginia. The Museum was open three days a week for public viewing.

Eight layouts operated during viewing hours with trains in constant motion. The layouts consisted of
- An O scale layout featuring analog controls for six individual trains.
- An O gauge layout featuring MTH DCS/analog controls for three trains.

The walls featured framed artwork, railroad posters, and shelving with models railroad rolling stock. Three displays featured shelving for model trains. These included

The glass display cases featured collections of railroad artifacts and model equipment. These included

- A display of pictures, tickets and other railroad memorabilia belonging to Ann Hundley Dovel.
- A display of local stock certificates, CB&Q telegraph key and sounder, and 1926 Ft. Defiance freight traffic ledger.

Displays and model layouts being dismantled for safe keeping in storage.

On November 23, 2020; the Staunton Mall was sold and the property scheduled for demolition. Plans to relocate were delayed by Covid and finding affordable space within Augusta County. The Museum took immediate steps to dismantle, safeguard, and place the display materials in public storage. This meant the leasing storage locally and moving the disassembled layout into the leased units.

Some of the items, were too large to be placed in the storage units, and these items were placed with our voluteers in "custodial" care. Other items were deemed too delicate for public storage, and these items were wrapped and placed in the care of our membership. All told, we were able to save most of what we had, excluding the O Scale layouts which weren't sectional in construction, but whose model materials could be readily packed and stacked.
